Keynote Speakers

Time out! Where are we and where are we going? Is it time to rethink how we identify and support students with learning disabilities? This keynote session takes a critical look at the history of learning disability assessment and support, where we are now, and where we need to go next. Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Schultz will examine long-standing practices that may no longer be supported by current research and consider how to replace them with more precise, research-informed approaches to identification and support. At the same time, progress does not mean abandoning everything from the past or embracing every new idea simply because it is new. Some principles and practices have endured because they remain valuable. The challenge is knowing what to keep, what to change, and what to leave behind as the field moves forward.

Dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia are among the specific learning disabilities that are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. With the right knowledge, instruction, and support, learners with specific learning disabilities can succeed throughout their school years and beyond. This keynote session
will provide a clear and practical overview of specific learning disabilities for anyone who wants to better understand and support learners with SLDs.
